For all sorts of reasons the concept of punishment has been on my mind this weekend. If we value punishment as a means of correction, then we're heading for trouble.

Perhaps not the most cheerful start to the week, but thoughts of mortality and how brief our time here is have been on my mind these last few days - for easily understandable reasons, the anniversary of my mum's passing, my father in law's 86th birthday, my wife's cousin's terminal illness - concentrating the mind.

A number of Spiritual traditions see our existence on this planet as being merely a dream or illusion and that our purpose here is to awaken from this dream. I do myself, broadly speaking, subscribe to that philosophy. There is though, a risk that this belief can lead us to some unhelpful conclusions and strategies.

This morning on the Today programme there was a discussion about the desirability (and sustainability) of banks making huge profits - on the back of Barclays posting an £11 billion plus profit.

Just as I was about to start writing this, there was a commotion outside in the street which turned out to be a couple who had managed to put unleaded petrol in their diesel car - something I've done once myself - it's the kind of thing you only do once , at least in my experience.
