There are countless influences affecting how productive we are at work, many of them having very little to do with work. What affects us most is how we are feeling.
This is a truth we often deny since we often feel at the effect of our emotions with little or no influence over them – except perhaps for giving ourselves a stiff talking to and telling ourselves (or perhaps someone else) to “pull yourself together man.” Whilst it’s dangerous to generalise, women are often wiser in this regard.
The third most often cited reason for stress and other related challenges is workplace relationships – that’s after housing and finance issues – presenteeism costs industry more than absenteeism. Relationships hold the promise of being the most fertile ground for our own growth.
Feeling Our Way Forward
We are not victims to how we feel, even though many of us will argue long and hard with this, it’s true. That’s the good news, how we feel is a pointer to things we need to and can change. This isn’t about change on the outside (necessarily) if we just change on the outside it won’t be long until we find ourselves back where we started on the inside. Using tried and tested techniques and widely accepted approaches, you can learn about yourself and so, change. It isn’t rocket science but it really does help to walk with a guide, at least some of the way.
Downward Spiral
Often poor performance breeds even worse performance since there is no understanding of what is really going on and we assume there is something fundamentally wrong with us. This is never the case, we may have work to do, but once we understand the causes of poor performance we can deal with them, for the most part, easily. Along the way we gather insights that allow us to deal with future challenges as they arise. Life does have its ups and downs and we can learn from those so that our general trajectory is upward.
