"what is to give light, must endure burning"
Viktor Frankl
Pastoral Counselling
We all have challenges in life, bereavement, relationship breakdown, parenting issues (which could be as parents or with our own parents), financial pressures or even redundancy. Sometimes we just need to talk to someone who isn’t involved but who understands, someone who can guide us through rough waters and show us a way forward.
There is a real win-win in supporting people through these testing times – recruitment and training are expensive and time consuming but if we genuinely care about our people and look after them, we will almost certainly shorten any period of reduced productivity and equally as certainly increase levels of loyalty, not just from those we help directly but by all those that work with them. On top of this we will enhance our reputation as an employer, which will give us an advantage in the employment market place.
This is a typical outcome of integrity (aligning our thoughts, words and actions) and compassion.
In those cases where we must make redundancies, it is important to support those affected. Oftentimes people feel badly treated in these situations, not because they were made redundant, but because of the way it was handled. In many cases redundancy is handled badly because of how bad the people who are making and implementing the decisions feel towards those losing their jobs. Coaching for the decision makers and counselling for those affected, directly or indirectly, can make the whole process markedly easier and less painful.
